Hike to Sam Summers Mining Hut (Walk in the footsteps of goldmining pioneers)

Experience pristine alpine vistas and walk in the footsteps of goldmining pioneers on this half-day adventure through classic New Zealand high-country bush.

Begin your journey with a beautiful scenic drive along Glenorchy Road. Renowned as “one of the most beautiful drives in the world”, the road hugs the turquoise shores of Lake Wakatipu as it winds through valleys and around mountain peaks.

We start our hiking adventure with a gentle climb through pristine native beech and Manuka forest. Keep an eye out for historic gold mining relics as your personal local guide explains the rich history and folklore of the trail.

Keep an eye out for spectacular waterfalls and an ‘ear out’ for the thunderous roar of raging water in the canyon below as we listen for the distinctive songs of our native birds — tui, native wood pigeons and bellbirds.

Discover hidden water races and old tailings, and take a peek into a 24m-long, 10m-high tail race tunnel, hand-built during the goldmining era.

Explore Sam Summers hut, an original goldmining home built from local schist rock and tin, letting your imagination wander as you step back in time to visualise the hard life of Sam Summers, a goldmining prospector who lived there for over a decade.

Up on the ridgeline we enjoy picturesque views across Lake Wakatipu and Lake Dispute before crossing over 12 Mile Creek on our return to Queenstown.

Our local personal guides love to tailor each tour to suit your interests and tastes. Get in touch to customise your hike and make your Queenstown adventure one to remember.
