Hike to Lake Alta, Remarkables
Duration: Half day from Queenstown
Available: Only available Nov – May, depending on snow levels
Distance: 2-3 hour hike
Rating: Moderate, some off piste
Lake Alta is tucked up in the Remarkables mountain range and hidden under snow during most winters. However, during the warmer months, it is the perfect destination for a breath-taking half-day hike featuring dramatic views that are even more stunning in summer as they are from the chairlift in winter.
We will pick you up from your hotel in Queenstown where we have a 45 minute drive from Queenstown up to the Remarkables ski field car park located at about 1600m, which gives us a substantial head start for our hike.
From here, it’s a steady climb up to Shadow Basin at 1900m. We’ll then traverse across the ridge line and drop down to Lake Alta for some photos, it was also the site of many movies – the 1999 movie Vertical Limit and more recently the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit.
If we are lucky we may come across the cheeky Kea – an Alpine parrot that is very intelligent and inquisitive. Chamois and deer are also known to be in this area so keep your eyes peeled.
The walking is relatively easy going as much of it is downhill however off the rough track it is schist rock and sturdy shoes are required for the uneven surfaces. Although the vistas and endless views are fantastic up there, it can be exposed so warm clothing is recommended whatever the weather.
We then walk downhill back to the car, stopping at the many vantage points to enjoy the views and drop you back at your hotel in Queenstown.
