Lake Sylvan Hike, Glenorchy

Duration: Full and half day options from Queenstown
Distance: 2 hour loop track
Rating: Easy

At the head of Lake Wakatipu, around the corner from (an actual place called) Paradise, I’ll take you on a lovely walk in Mt Aspiring National Park. We start the Lake Sylvan hike with a one-hour drive from Queenstown that was voted the 2nd ‘Most Beautiful Drive in the World’ by Lonely Planet in 2014! Once we reach the charming township of Glenorchy, it’s just a bit further before we reach the trailhead for an easy 2-hour walk to this picturesque lake. The track leads us through old moraine river terraces and well-established red beech (tawhai raunui), to the edge of Lake Sylvan. Here we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch and watch for endangered yellowheads (mohua) overhead and brown trout rising in the water.

Return is via an old tramline that was built in the 1920s where the beech forest is now regenerating.

Allow about 4.5 hours from Queenstown for half day option of the Lake Sylvan hike. Or have some time to explore Glenorchy and do another short but incredibly scenic walk in Bob’s Cove on the full day option.
