Lake Sylvan Hike

Immerse yourself in breathtaking scenery, and stroll through old-growth forests and moraine river terraces on this half day hike to Mount Aspiring National Park’s Lake Sylvan.

Begin your adventure with a spectacular scenic drive to Glenorchy. Recognised as “one of the most beautiful drives in the world”, the road hugs the turquoise shores of Lake Wakatipu as it winds through valleys and around mountain peaks.

Relax in the comfort of your Land Rover Discovery or Mercedes van and enjoy the flexibility of stopping wherever and whenever you like for photo opportunities or rest stops.

When we reach the head of the trail we begin our adventure on foot, crossing a swing bridge over the Routeburn River and winding our way through towering red beech forest to the perfect viewing point at Lake Sylvan.

Your personal local guide will explain the rich Maori history of the region and point out native flora and fauna as you keep an eye out for our endangered yellowhead/mōhua and New Zealand’s smallest native bird the rifleman.

Soak up the tranquillity of this pristine environment, before our return hike along a 1920s tramline loop. The track was used for transporting native beech trees to the valley floor which early settlers used for building boats. See the regenerating beech forest in this cutover area of land before heading back towards Queenstown.
